AGI 2008

One conference ends and the next one begins.

Just over a week ago we held the wrap up meeting of the conference team for AGI 2007, after basking in the glory of a successful event our thoughts inevitably turned to "What next?" Amazingly all of the committee were enthusiastic about the prospect of "just one more" so we are about to embark on AGI 2008 and somehow I was persuaded to chair a second conference and why not? The last one was a lot of fun.

We are starting to think about conference themes and whilst we have a few ideas we would welcome suggestions from delegates to the last event or from those who didn't attend the event but would attend the next one if it covered ......

I am keen that we get input from a neo-geographer to counterbalance the brontosaurus like weight of the paleo-geographers on the team. So if you are a neo who would like to get involved in planning next year's conference mail me or post here or contact Chris at AGI.

Unfortunately the AGI conference seems always to coincide with FOSS4G so I've never made it to one yet. However, I would like to see more discussion of open source GIS as opposed to the two "tribes" mentioned here, which seem to be the traditional ESRI/Mapinfo GIS versus google map mashups and other similar things. It would be good to get more discussion of open source GIS in the UK as there isn't that much at the moment compared to other countries, and for a lot of people/organisations it would be a viable alternative, if only they knew about it!

Good point, I would welcome some contributions from the OS community (that is me personally, the selection group could have their own view).

Will you submit a paper and perhaps encourage others within the open source world to submit?

It would be great to have a balanced view about the costs and benefits of OS and Commercial software - why it is great for some situations and possibly not so great for others. Too often discussion about OS becomes a statement of religion or ideological.

I will certainly consider submitting a paper- it has been a bit of a mission of mine to get a balanced view about the open vs closed source debate, and I agree that the argument often becomes... umm... unproductive.

OSGEO (http://www.osgeo.org/) are good people to speak to if you're interested- in fact we're trying to get some interest in a UK chapter to promote the use of open source GIS in the UK. It's at a very early stage at the moment but there's a wiki if you want to express interest(http://wiki.osgeo.org/index.php/United_Kingdom)
