I am not sure that I get the compelling reason for another crowd sourced mapping project, are they expecting the OSM community to switch allegiance or is there another group of contributors that they are targeting?
23 days to budget and counting ...
Some thought and discussion on the GI scene in the UK and some irrelevant stuff on football

Just to say that People's map was originally launched in May 2007 and was then relaunched recently. We have an article about it, and many other interesting projects in the Ideas in Transit wiki (http://ideasintransit.wikia.com/wiki/People%27s_Map). Progress on People's Map in the past two years seems to have been limited based on a spot check of Ipswich, Cambridge, Birmingham and Manchester. Note that Birmingham and London were seeded with data to start with which explains the high level of detail for the major parts of those places up to a hard boundary line where detailed mapping stops. In February there were only 3 'prolific' contributors adding more than 1000 roads each and only 10 who added more than 160 roads which isn't going to get the job done quickly. What a shame that they don't allow there fantastic UK photography to be used by OpenStreetMap
Perhaps the recent updates to People's Map will stimulate a higher level of adoption? Personally I doubt it.
At some stage there will be a severe outbreak of VCF (Voluntary Contributor Fatigue) and at best one of the collaborative mapping ventures flourish, that would be OSM who have achieved critical mass in terms of data and contributors.
The People's map has steadily been growing over the last 2 years since its original launch in 2007. The project was not recently re-launched, but a new website with better editing functionalities and improved database architecture and infrastructure was launched.
Since the website launch, the People’s Map have received 100’s of new registered users that like the idea and principles behind the People’s Map. They have been contributing new towns and areas ever since and I would say the PM data growth has been steady, sustainable, but on the increase.
Here is a list of our completed as well as “in progress” cartographic products:
1) UK 1:1,000,000 data set
2) 1:10,000 Scale datasets for Edinburgh, Glasgow and Birmingham with Greater London soon to be complete.
3) The other major project in progress is a UK wide 1:100,000 map due for completion by the end of 2009.
4) 2010 will bring a 1:50,000 map, etc
5) Ad hoc projects undertaken by our various contributors
The People’s Map has from the start marketed itself as a commercial project working in partnership with private and commercial entities. A Partnership means both parties benefit. Even if there is VCF as Steven called it, the commercial arm of the People’s Map will keep on existing and the datasets will keep growing as data growth does not only rely on general ad hoc contributors, but also on the team of in-house cartographers that not only check and verify the data created by the contributors, but also create data themselves. The People’s Map is therefore a sustainable solution that has been clear on its commercial intentions from the start.
The People’s Map is very much alive and kicking and if you want to read more on the People’s Map, check out its functionalities and good aerial photography, please visit the website www.peoplesmap.com or the blog http://peoplesmap.blogspot.com/
